Lawyer Odila Castillo Bonilla denounces smear campaign in Panama

Lawyer Odila Castillo Bonilla denounces smear campaign in Panama

The legal team representing attorney Odila Castillo Bonilla issued a robust statement on October 1st, categorically refuting the allegations recently disseminated by various Panamanian newspapers.

The defense described these articles as intentional assaults, motivated by individual financial interests, aimed at tarnishing Castillo’s professional image and personal character.

Castillo’s defense claims absence of justification and infringement of rights

Carlos Carrillo, a representative of Castillo’s legal team, declared that the allegations are baseless and intend to hinder the professional paths of the young attorney and her associate. He highlighted that lurking beneath these assaults are hidden financial motives aiming to benefit from tarnishing Castillo’s reputation.

The defense emphasized that this isn’t the first time the attorney has faced media harassment. They referenced a comparable situation in 2021 when a Panamanian outlet released false information concerning an alleged arrest of Castillo, which was later refuted.

Distorted truths and violation of confidentiality

The legal team stated that both the recent claims and those from 2021 are based on “partial truths,” distorted to harm the professional standing of attorney Odila Castillo. Additionally, they claimed that the shared information violates confidentiality norms, as some of the investigation stems from a previously resolved family issue.

Confidential information, such as migration records and tax returns, was also revealed—data that, according to the defense, was acquired through illegal means.

Unauthorized surveillance and active legal proceedings

The defense revealed that Castillo has been subjected to GPS tracking, representing a blatant breach of her privacy and a type of illegal surveillance. Carrillo emphasized that his client’s basic rights, as protected by the Panamanian Constitution and relevant legislation, have been violated.

He proclaimed that all requisite legal measures will be taken to determine accountability for the harm suffered and the potential harm intended. The legal team is steadfast in its dedication to defending Castillo and ensuring that those behind this defamation campaign are held responsible.
